Right on Course, a Haley Sperling Project, is dedicated the memory of Haley Sperling, a young Teach for America corps member tragically killed in a car accident after her first year teaching in the Rio Grande Valley.
In her short life, Haley inspired many through her commitment to children and to teaching. Her commitment is honored by providing fellowships to teachers for research related to child development and by developing products for teachers to integrate that information into their classroom experience.
Fellows who contributed to the Haley Sperling Project, Right on Course, include:
Helene Hollingsworth The first recipient of the Haley Sperling Fellowship, Helene received her undergraduate degree in psychology from Indiana University where she has returned to pursue a degree in school psychology. Helene is a 1996 Teach for America corps member who taught with Haley in the Rio Grande Valley. "The Haley Sperling Fellowship will provide me with the resources I need to help new teachers incorporate knowledge of child development and early interventions into their every day teaching practices."
Steffie Spanakos Having completed her commitment as a Teach for America corps member, Steffie continues to teach in Oakland, California. Steffie joined Teach for America after receiving her bachelor's degree from Gettysburg College and completing her master's in education from the University of Texas at Austin. "This Fellowship will help me further my mission to provide excellent educational opportunities for students. By helping teachers understand core concepts about early childhood development, they will have new ways to approach learning, as well as relationships, in their classroom."
Rebecca H. Kirshenbaum is an elementary school teacher in Manhattan, served as the 2001 Haley Sperling Fellow. Prior to teaching in Manhattan she was a Teach for America corps member in Baltimore. With a bachelor's degree in English from Cornell University and master's in English and comparative literature from Columbia University, she worked on the development and distribution of Right on Course. "I was very excited to have the opportunity to work with Civitas through the Haley Sperling Fellowship and continue to use education and educational resources to impact the lives of children," explains Rebecca.
Paige Panzner After serving as a bilingual teacher with the Teach For America initiative, Paige continued to work in the field of public service both domestically and abroad. Projects have led her to a diversity of locations, including working as a Peace Corps volunteer in Madagascar and co-founding an alternative high school for adult men at the Rikers Island Maximum Security Prison in New York City. In 2001, she completed a master's degree in public and non-profit management from the Robert F. Wagner School for Public Service at New York University. Since completing her graduate work and a research project in Europe, Paige has worked as a bilingual consultant, writer, and program developer for various nonprofit organizations.
