Board of Directors

Our Board of Directors is a highly talented and committed team of individuals. Their unique backgrounds and diverse areas of expertise reflect the multi-disciplinary nature of our work, which allows them to guide the organization in both relationship building and program development.

John R. Torell III, Chairman of the Civitas Board of Directors, is also the Chairman of Indecomm Global Services, a business process outsourcing, IT services and consulting company serving the financial, education and healthcare industries. He is a partner in the Hamilton White Group, a private equity company specializing in education, and also Chairman of the International Executive Services Corps, an economic development organization servicing the developing world. He is the former President of Manufacturers Hanover Corporation, a predecessor organization to JPMorgan Chase.

Timothy P. Coon, is a partner and senior litigator in the law firm Wilson Elser Moskowitz Edelman & Dicker, LLP, a national firm with offices throughout the United States. Timothy's practice includes representation of professional sports leagues, Fortune 100 companies and regional companies on issues of employment, civil rights, contracts and real estate. He serves on the NYS Bar Committee for Federal Litigation and In-House Counsel, and as a Board member of the John Jay Legal Services Corp., which integrates law student interns with low income persons in need of legal services. In addition he volunteers as a basketball coach for the Minutemen, a national AAU Boys program.

Jeffrey D. Jacobs, J.D., Adjunct Professor Loyola University Chicago School of Law; Founder, Civitas Initiative. Jeff started his legal career as a litigator and evolved into entertainment and sports representation. In 1984 Oprah Winfrey hired him as her personal attorney, and they built Harpo Entertainment Group, where he was president for 18 years. Mr. Jacobs has served on the American Bar Association Committee on the Unmet Legal Needs of Children and The Citizens Committee of the Juvenile Court of Cook County. He currently serves as Trustee of the Santa Barbara Children's Museum and the University of Chicago Medical Center.

Linda Miller, Partner & Chief Administrative Officer, the Mitchell Madison Group, a multinational strategic consulting and sourcing company, headquartered in NYC and serving a diverse clientele of financial, manufacturing, airlines, publishing and service companies. Previously, she was with FreeMarket Global, an energy resource company, and James A. Jennings Co., a New York construction management firm.

Dr. Marilyn Seymann, Chairman and CEO of the International Institute of the Americas(IIA.org), a Phoenix headquartered college specializing in healthcare and general business. Previously, she was Associate Dean of the School of Law at Arizona State; CEO of M ONE Inc, a financial services consulting firm; and founder of a number of women's and children's assistance organizations.

Harriette Terbell is CEO and Founder of Terbell Partners, Ltd. (“TPL”), an advisory and private equity firm that co-invests in transactions that require operating improvements, business model redesign, strategic repositioning, and management expertise. Pre- and post-transaction, TPL provides management and market focus to portfolio companies that need operating direction and support beyond financial engineering. She has particular expertise in business development, strategic planning, restructuring organizations, sourcing executive talent, mentoring/coaching CEO’s and leadership teams, and designing systems and processes that build high-performance cultures and align shareholder and executive interests. Prior to founding TPL, she was a Partner for 15 years with The Hay Group, as well as an officer at Fleet Financial. She is a regular contributor to Directors & Boards magazine. She has chaired for several years the Annual Fund for the Fairfield Country Day School and served on the Steering Committee for its Capital Campaign. She was a parent fundraiser for the Hotchkiss School and is a Trinity College Parent Director. For six years, Ms. Terbell served on the National Board for Jumpstart for Children and was a member of its Finance and Audit Committee.
